In November, by order of the division surgeon, a systematic inoculation of all troops at Camp Funston with pneumococcus lipo vaccine containing Types I, II, and III was begun. Upward of 35,000 troops were inoculated during November and December. But few instances of pneumococcus pneumonia were admitted to the base hospital at Fort Riley during these months. The type of the infection, in the few patients admitted since the inoculation, has been pneumococcus IV or hemolytic streptococcus. Although it is too soon after the inoculation to draw conclusions, it appears that very definite protection has been given a large proportion of the population of the reservation by the pneumococcus lipo vaccine.
