The Fight for the Hürtgen Forest
2D RANGER INFANTRY BATTALION
The 2d Ranger Infantry Battalion was committed to the fighting in the Hurtgen Forest in November 1944. Early in December 1944, the 2d Rangers Battalion was involved in one of the most bitter of a series of bitter infantry fights that typified the Hurtgen Forest in taking the town of Bergstein and the dominating height of Hill 400.5 (Burgberg or Castle Hill)which gave the Germans a critical observation post overlooking the entire battlefield. In this section are the combat interview with Maj. George S. Williams, Commander, and Captain Edward Arnold, Executive Officer, of the 2d Rangers who were involved in the December fighting and two medical detachment reports which include coverage the detachment`s operations in the fighting. The detachment commander, Capt. Walter E. Block, MC, was killed in action during the fighting on Hill 400.5.
