Graduated from South Side Hospital Training School for Nurses, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1906

Career:

She was one of the most influential nurses in military history, serving during both world wars. Her overseas assignments included China and the Philippines. She became the Assistant Superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) in 1939 with the relative rank of captain, and succeeded Julia Flikke as Superintendent with the rank of full colonel. She oversaw the massive buildup of the ANC during World War II when the Corps reached its all-time peak strength of 57,000 nurses. She was the first to have the title of Chief and in 1947 became the first woman commissioned as a colonel in the Regular Army. She received the Distinguished Service Medal among her many awards and honors.
