Education:

Attended Cook Academy, a Baptist boarding school, Montour Falls, New York

Graduated from Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing, New York, New York in 1887.

Career:

She was internationally known as a leader in the organization of nursing within the American Nurses Association and the American Red Cross and became the Second Superintendent of the Army Nurse Corps (ANC). Her interest in building up a reserve for the ANC resulted in an elibible list of 3,000 professional nurses before her resignation in 1912 to head the American National Red Cross Nursing Service. She engineered a supply of over 21,000 professional nurses for World War I. She died in France while on a Red Cross mission and received the Distinguished Service Medal posthumously.
