Graduated from Harlem hospital School of Nursing, New York, New York in 1950

Received a B.A., Villanova University, Villanova, Pennsylvania in 1959

Received a M.A., Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, New York in 1963

Received a Ph.D., Catholic University of America, Washington, DC in 1978

Career:

Brigadier General Johnson received her ANC commission in 1955. Her overseas assignments included service in Japan and Korea. In September 1979, she became the first African American woman to attain general officer rank in American military history. Under her tenure as Chief, the Corps continued to improve standards of education and training. The Army Nurse Corps Standards of Nursing Practice were published as an official Department of the Army Pamphlet (DA PAM 40-5). She received the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion Of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster among her awards and honors.
