History of Certificate of Merit
INTERESTING NOTES:
Privates William Girdwood and Richard Costner received the Certificate of Merit for taking an ambulance and rescuing an officer wounded by Sioux Indians near the Catholic Mission at White Clay Creek the day after Wounded Knee. They are the first known AMEDD recipients of the Certificate of Merit.
SFC Leopold David went on to become the first Mayor of the new city of Anchorage, Alaska in 1920.
Sergeant Halbert Beasley earned his Certificate of Merit for his life saving actions following a train derailment in which he was one of the injured.
Private Fred Newsome is the last known AMEDD recipient of the Certificate of Merit for actions 27 August 1915.

BEASLEY, HALBERT M.

    Date of Action: October  1913
    Synopsis:
    In October, 1913, a train  carrying a band and two companies of Coast Artillery Corps, left the track and  crashed through a wooden bridge near Buckatunna, Miss, and as a result, 17 men  were killed and nearly 100 more or less seriously injured.  Sergeant Halbert M. Beasley, Hospital Corps,  although he was himself injured, worked unceasingly in rendering first aid and  assisting in the removal of the wounded.

BEYERL, PHILIP M.

    Date of Action: November  13, 1899
  Synopsis:
    For saving an insane  soldier from drowning, Manila Bay, P.I., November 13, 1899.  While on duty on the hospital ship Relief, an  insane patient having eluded his attendant and jumped overboard, Private Beyerl  sprang after him without a moment’s hesitation, and, although the night was  dark and the bay rough, succeeded in reaching the patient and supported him  until a boat came to his assistance.

COSTNER, RICHARD

  Citation:
    For gallantry in action  against hostile Sioux Indians, near the Catholic Mission on White Clay Creek,  South Dakota, in taking the ambulance, abandoned by its civilian teamster, and  rescuing a wounded officer under fire, on the battlefield.

    For distinguished service  in voluntarily continuing on his journey from Circle City to relieve reported  suffering and sickness among the natives of Fort Yukon, Alaska, after his only  assistant had been left behind disabled, and in spite of severe suffering from  frost, involving the loss of several of his toes.

  Synopsis:
    Private First Class Thomas  Mosely, Hospital Corps, was awarded a certificate of merit for distinguished  gallantry in action against hostile Moros while private, Hospital Corps, when  he bandaged a wounded officer, in the face of a heavy fire from the Moro  trenches, and carried him to a place of safety at the risk of his own life.  This at Bagsak Mountain, Jolo, P.I., June 11,  1913

    Sergeant Harry E. Pye was  granted a certificate of merit November 1, 1911, for gallant conduct in  assisting, at the risk of his own life, in saving a native from drowning, on  the capsizing of a lorcha.  This occurred  in the narrows between the island of Samal and the minland of Mindanao, P.I.,  March 1, 1911

  Citation:
