CSM Scott served from September 1996 to August 2000 as the eleventh Command Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Health Services Command/MEDCOM

Command Sergeant Major Walter R. Scott attended basic training at Fort Gordon, Georgia and received his Advanced Individual Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. During his 30 years of military service, his assignments included one tour in Vietnam, Japan and two tours in Germany. His CONUS assignments include duty with the 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Silas B. Hayes Hospital, Fort Ord, California; Noble Army Hospital, Fort McClellan, Alabama; Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington; Dewitt Army Hospital, Fort Belvoir, Virginia; and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Command Sergeant Major Scott served as the Command Sergeant Major of the 421st Medical Evacuation Battalion; Frankfurt Army Regional Medical Center; Dewitt Army Hospital; Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command. Command Sergeant Major Scott was selected as the eleventh Command Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Health Services Command, which was redesignated as the U.S. Army Medical Command. Command Sergeant Major Scott has attended numerous Army schools to include the Noncommissioned Officer Academy, the Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, and the Sergeants Major Academy.

Command Sergeant Major Scott's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge with Bronze Star.
