For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of dutythe Medal of Honor was awarded to RICHARD J. CURRAN
Assistant Surgeon, 33d New York Infantry, at Antietam, Maryland, 17 September 1862. Voluntarily exposed himself to great danger by going to the fighting line there succoring the wounded and helpless and conducting them to the field hospital.
