For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty the Medal of Honor was awarded to GEORGE W. MATHEWS
Assistant Surgeon, 36th Infantry, US Volunteers, near Labao, Luzon, Philippine Islands, 29 October 1899. While in attendance upon the wounded and under a severe fire from the enemy, seized a carbine and beat off an attack upon wounded officers and men under his charge.
