For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty the Medal of Honor was awarded to GEORGE F. SHIELS
Surgeon, US Volunteers, at Tuliahan River, Philippine Islands, 25 March 1899. Voluntarily exposed himself to the fire of the enemy and went with four men to the relief of two native Filipinos lying wounded about 150 yards in front of the lines and personally carried one of them to a place of safety.
NOTE: George F. Shiels also earned the Silver Star in WW I.
