Bronze Star with "V" Device > WWII

Interesting Notes:

CPT Robert S. Kinoshita is a double recipient of the Silver Star, double recipient of the Bronze Star with V device, three time recipient of the Purple Heart, and received the Combat Medic Badge. He was originally a member of the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Nisei Volunteers) but was transferred to the 7th Armored Division before they shipped out. Private First Class James F. Kimmel and Technician Fourth Class Troy L. Kuykendall extracted three wounded men from a damaged tank while under intense enemy artillery fire.

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (sec. II, WD Bul. 3, 1944), a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States during the period indicated is awarded to Private First Class Herbert Kaetzel, Medical Department, Army of the United States, a member of the Medical Detachment, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, on 6 February 1945, distinguished himself by heroic action in Germany. When one of the company, to which Private First Class Kaetzel was attached as aid man, walked into a mine field and was fatally wounded, Private first Class Kaetzel, without hesitation and disregard for his personal safety, crawled through thick snow to his aid. Forced to work in an icy stream, Private First Class Kaetzel rendered skilled aid and stopped the flow of blood so that the injured man could be evacuated. This gallant act and the devotion to duty shown by Private First Class Kaetzel reflect credit upon himself and the military service.

KIMMEL, JAMES F.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419 and under the provisions of AR 600-45 and circular 66 First U.S. Army, the Bronze Star is awarded to Private First Class James F. Kimmel, Medical Department, United States Army. On 9 July 1944 when informed that three wounded men were trapped in a tank, PFC Kimmel went forward with two companions to aid the wounded men. The area at this time was under very heavy enemy artillery fire. PFC Kimmel succeeded in giving first aid to two of the men and directed them to walk to the rear. It took a considerably longer time to remove the third man who was fastened in the forward compartment and badly wounded, but they successfully removed him and completed the evacuation although the position was under fire. His devotion to his duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the Army Medical Department.

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (sec. II, WD Bul. 3, 1944), a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States during the period indicated is awarded to Private First Class George F. Kincaid III, Medical Department, Army of the United States, a member of the Medical Detachment, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, on 3 March and 11 March 1945, distinguished himself by heroic action in Germany. On 3 March 1945, when a fellow aid man was wounded, Private First Class Kincaid, without hesitation or regard for personal safety, and under a terrific hail of enemy machine gun fire, crawled to the aid of his buddy. After treating the wound, he successfully evacuated him. On 11 March 1945 Private First Class Kincaid, during a heavy enemy artillery barrage, volunteered without hesitation to render first aid to a group of wounded men left behind as a result of the rapid advance of our troops. His devotion to his duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the Army Medical Department.

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (sec. II, WD Bul. 3, 1944), a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States during the periods indicated was awarded by the Commanding General, European Theater, to Captain Robert S. Kinoshita, Medical Corps, Army of the United States, while serving with Medical Detachment, 38the Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division, displayed heroism in action on 11 September 1944 at Chambley Area, France. Captain Kinoshita volunteered to lead a group of men to the aid of an isolated platoon. He skillfully led the way over dangerous terrain, dexterously treated the wounded, and prepared their evacuation. Later, learning of wounded men on an open field in front of a strongly fortified enemy position, he went forward completely exposed, waved a Red Cross flag, and successfully evacuated these men. Captain Kinoshita’s heroic actions helped save many lives.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul. 3, 1944), a Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievements in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States was awarded by the Commanding General, European Theater, to Technician Third Grade Leonard H. Klosner, Medical Detachment, 274th Infantry Regiment, Medical Department, Army of the United States, displayed heroic conduct in action at Stiring Wendel, France, on 7 March 1945. He set up a forward aid station under heavy artillery fire and within range of small arms fire. Although wounded by a direct hit of a shell on the aid station, Technician Klosner courageously maintained it in operation until the situation improved and he could be treated. His devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

KOWALCZYK, ALOYSIOUS J.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419 and under the provisions of AR 600-45 and circular 66 First U.S. Army, the Bronze Star is awarded to Technician Fifth Grade Aloysious J. Kowalczyk, Medical Department, United States Army. When his organization was struck by a heavy counterattack on 6 July 1944 forcing elements of his battalion back, many wounded were left within the enemy lines. Tech 5 Kowalczyk volunteered to accompany a group into this area, which was still under heavy machine gun fire, and evacuated a number of the wounded to a place of safety. His devotion to his duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the Army Medical Department.
