Private First Class Philip B. Trout was treating casualties when he was wounded in the abdomen by shell fragments. Unable to walk, he crawled to treat casualties until he himself collapsed.

Private First Class Vane W. Thomas earned the Bronze Star with "V" device twice in WW II

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419 and under the provisions of AR 600-45 and Section I, Circular 6 Third U.S. Army, 26 April 1944, the Bronze Star is awarded to Private Edouard B. Therrien, Medical Department, United States Army for heroic achievement in operations on 17 November 1944 in the vicinity of Metzervisse, France. During the attack on the town, Private Therrien, Aid Man, was captured by the enemy. Shortly afterward he effected an escape and returned to the Battalion Command Post where he reported detailed information concerning key enemy positions. He then returned to his duties and assisted in the evacuation of further casualties. His devotion to his duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the Army Medical Department.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419 and under the provisions of AR 600-45 and circular 66 First U.S. Army, the Bronze Star is awarded to Private First Class John D. Thomas, Medical Department, United States Army. When his organization was struck by a heavy counterattack on 6 July 1944 forcing elements of his battalion back, many wounded were left within the enemy lines. PFC Thomas volunteered to accompany a group into this area, which was still under heavy machine gun fire, and evacuated a number of the wounded to a place of safety. His devotion to his duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the Army Medical Department.

The direction of the President under the provisions of Executive Order No. 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, Bull 3 WD 1944) a Bronze Star Medal is awarded by the Commanding General, 6th Infantry Division, APO 6, to Private First Class Vane W. Thomas, Medical Department, United States Army. For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Munoz, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 1 February 1945. An infantry company attacked the enemy who were firmly entrenched on high ground and a raging battle ensued with no immediate sign of a let-up. Without hesitation, Private Thomas, a member of a litter squad, went into the fierce battle amidst cross-fire from both friendly and enemy troops to recover casualties. He made three separate trips over one hundred yards of open terrain, each time bringing back a wounded man.

The direction of the President, in addition to the Bronze Star Medal awarded to Private First Class Vane W. Thomas, by the Commanding General, 6th Infantry Division, APO 6, as published on page 23, Section III, General Orders No. 50, dated 11 April 1945, a bronze Oak-Leaf Cluster is awarded to him by the Commanding General, 6th Infantry Division, APO 6, under the provisions of Executive Order No. 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, Bull 3 WD 1944).  The citation follows:
Private First Class Vane W. Thomas, Medical Department, United States Army. For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Bayanbayanan area, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 29 March 1945. Private Thomas, with disregard for his personal Safety, rushed across open terrain and successfully removed a wounded man to a defiladed area. Despite heavy enemy mortar fire, he administered medical aid until a litter squad evacuated the wounded man. Private Thomas’ courage resulted in saving the life of a wounded comrade.

TROXELL, DAVID H.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419 and under the provisions of AR 600-45 and circular 6, Third U.S. Army, the Bronze Star is awarded to Technician Fifth Grade David H. Troxell, Medical Department, United States Army. On 12 June 1944 when a withdrawal of his unit was ordered, Technician 5 Troxell, of his own accord, stayed on the vacated position to care for the wounded. He gave aid to and directed four walking casualties back to their lines. Technician 5 Troxell then found a seriously wounded soldier with whom he stayed all night under friendly artillery fire falling in the area. At daylight he succeeded in carrying the wounded man to safety. Such loyalty and devotion to duty upholds the highest traditions of military service.

Tschabrunn, Medical Department, United States Army. On 10 June 1944 near ***, France, when the Commanding Officer of an Infantry company was wounded and left within enemy territory, PFC Tschabrunn, on his own volition, stayed with the wounded officer throughout the night although the territory was still under heavy artillery fire. PFC Tschabrunn’s devotion to duty resulted in the evacuation of the officer and the saving of the officer’s life. His devotion to his duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on himself and the Army Medical Department.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 9419 and under the provisions of AR 600-45 and Section I Circular 6 Third U.S. Army, 26 April 1944, the Bronze Star is awarded to Captain Clifford E. Vinson, Medical Corps, United States Army for heroic achievement in operations on 12 November 1944 in the vicinity of Petite Hettange, France. When a fierce enemy counterattack threatened to overrun the Battalion Aid Station, Captain Vinson, Battalion Surgeon, calmly continued to administer medical treatment to the wounded and direct their evacuation. His cool courage in remaining at his post inspired the men under his command and reflects great credit upon himself and the Medical Corps. His heroic achievement was in accordance with military tradition.
